What are the contextual attributes and agencies that construct our spatial experience? How do they affect our sense of spatial presence? Can we question/change the nature of our presence by transforming the spatial attributes? Can we forge a new spatiality by understanding design as a tool, enabling and affording new experiences? How can we modulate/transform spatial agencies? Can we dislocate ourselves from a space, its context, through spatial effects? Can we immerse into an experience that is unfamiliar, strange, and surreal and so on?
The smell as a sense often got forgotten, what is it like being in a place with smell only? The intention of this is installation is to create a space with highlighting on smell. In Asian culture, there is a saying of "three wise monkeys" which are three monkeys with their eyes, mouth, and ears covered, the nose got left out and it also calls attention to the sense of smell. The hands are hanging in front of the biggest window in the room, various fabrics corresponding to different kinds of smells. Walking in between the hands is like entered a scent maze, based on the different smell choose to follow, a new pathway will be creative each time. The installation allowed people to study and discover a space with a sense not often been used in architecture and exploring the new pathway it may create.
The hand-shape represents blocking the other senses, and the hands have been sprayed with scented liquids, which are the smells were found within the space.
The black dots on top are activated carbon, they play the role of tiny scent collectors, lock the smell within the space.
This drawing recorded the pathway the smell created.
This GIF shows the walk guided by the smell.
